A beginning-of-year math assessment for 2nd grade tells you where each student is starting from, before you plan a single lesson. The free test below has 11 items worth 29 points, covers four Common Core domains, and comes with its answer key — download it, give it in the first weeks of school, and use the scoring guide further down to sort students into groups.

What the test covers

The 11 items are split across four domains, carried over from the end of 1st grade and the start of 2nd grade:

  • Operations & Algebraic Thinking (items 1, 6, 10, 11 — 10 points): addition and subtraction within 20, even and odd numbers, one-step addition and subtraction word problems.
  • Number & Operations in Base Ten (items 2, 3, 4, 5 — 11 points): place value with tens and ones, comparing two-digit numbers, addition and subtraction within 100, skip counting by 5s and 10s.
  • Measurement & Data (items 7, 8 — 5 points): telling time to the hour and half hour, counting a mix of coins.
  • Geometry (item 9 — 3 points): naming the number of sides and vertices on a shape.

Each item is worth 2-4 points and most allow partial credit, so a student doesn't lose every point for one small mistake — more on scoring below.

How to give it

Plan for 30-45 minutes. Read the directions aloud if your class needs it, and don't allow calculators — this is a check of where each student stands on grade-level skills, not a speed test. It works equally well as a homeschool check-in; just time it loosely and let your child take a short break between pages if they need one.

How to score it

Each item lists its point value (for example "/3" or "/2") next to the question. Award partial credit: if an item has multiple parts, give one point per correct part rather than all-or-nothing. Add up the 11 items for a score out of 29, then place it in a band:

  • Mastered — 24 to 29 points. Ready for grade-level work; these students can take on enrichment.
  • Developing — 18 to 23 points. Mostly on track; reteach the weakest domain in small groups.
  • Beginning — 0 to 17 points. Needs targeted support; plan intervention around the specific skills missed.

Scoring by domain narrows this further. A student can land in "Developing" overall but have fully mastered Geometry (3/3) while struggling with Number & Operations in Base Ten (4/11) — that's the group to pull for a focused mini-lesson on place value and two-digit comparison, not a generic review of "everything."

What to do with the results

Group students by their weakest domain rather than their overall band — two students can land in "Developing" for very different reasons. If most of the class is low on the same domain, that's a sign to slow down and reteach it whole-group before moving on. Keep the scored tests; if you also give the middle-of-year and end-of-year versions later, comparing the same domains across all three shows actual growth, not just a single snapshot.

This beginning-of-year test is one of three in the Grade 2 Math Assessment Pack — it also includes a middle-of-year test (January) and an end-of-year test (May/June), each with its own answer key, plus a standards map, a class tracker for up to 25 students, and a one-page student progress snapshot that lines up all three tests side by side. If you teach more than one grade, the K-5 Math Assessment Bundle covers Kindergarten through 5th in one download.

FAQ

How long should the beginning-of-year math assessment take?

Plan for 30-45 minutes. Read directions aloud if needed, and don't allow calculators.

Is partial credit allowed?

Yes. Most items have 2-4 points across multiple parts — award one point per correct part instead of marking the whole item wrong for a single error.

What should I do if a student scores in the "Beginning" band?

Look at the score-by-domain breakdown rather than only the total. Plan targeted small-group instruction on the specific domain they missed instead of a general review.

Does the full pack include more than the beginning-of-year test?

Yes — the Grade 2 Math Assessment Pack adds a middle-of-year and an end-of-year test, a standards map, a class tracker, and a student progress snapshot to track growth across the year.

Is this aligned to a specific standard?

Yes, every item maps to a Common Core State Standard (for example 2.OA.2 or 2.NBT.5) — the full pack's standards map lists the exact code for each item.
